Tips for Breakfast in Bed on Mother’s Day

Is there anything sweeter than a lie in on a Sunday morning? Breakfast in bed is a Mother’s Day tradition for many and is apparently high up on the list of presents UK mums would like to receive this weekend.

A survey of 500 mums by Cancer Research UK found that 34 per cent were hoping to be dining under the duvet on Mother’s Day with 47 per cent stating they would like to be the happy recipient of a homemade card.

According to the charity, breakfast in bed is the ultimate in luxury for many mums because they spend a total of two full days each year preparing the first meal of the day for their partners and children.

The statistics show that 77 per cent of mums give their kids breakfast before having their own and 53 per cent of those who do have breakfast settle for eating their little ones’ leftovers.

With this in mind, we think mums deserve breakfast in bed this Mother’s Day, so we’re sharing a few tips to help make things special.

The menu

Breakfast in bed can be a tricky affair; along with crumbs under the duvet you risk spilling cereal on the sheets. However, with a bit of careful planning and directing in the kitchen kids can put together a menu that will wow mum and minimise mess.

Instead of easy spill cereal, consider filling bowls with porridge with interesting toppings, bircher muesli or overnight oats. Croissants or pain au chocolate make a luxury alternative to toast, though with more enticing toppings like avocado and salmon the latter can be just as much of a treat.

Older kids may want to brave making something a little more difficult such as a bacon sandwich or boiled egg and soldiers or dads could help them prepare a stack of pancakes or homemade breakfast muffins. Whatever children serve up mum is sure to appreciate the effort.

Presentation

Keep crumbs under the duvet at bay with a beautiful tray to carry mum’s breakfast. Serve up the food with a coffee or tea in her favourite mug. Stop the tray from tipping by putting a single flower in a cup rather than trying to carry a full bouquet in a vase - you can always keep the rest of the bunch downstairs to present once breakfast is finished and the dishes are done!

Is breakfast in bed on the menu for you this Mother's Day? Will you be hoping for a lie on or will you be on duty directing things in the kitchen?
